Where to Stay in Seoul for Easy City-Tour Bus Access

The most useful place to stay is not automatically the neighbourhood with the most hotels. For a Seoul city-tour bus day, it is the area that fits your chosen operator, ticket-exchange plan and first boarding point.

Seoul has two independent city-tour networks. Tiger Bus runs its main daytime loop from Gwanghwamun, while Yellow Balloon City Bus uses Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) as the departure base for its Traditional Culture Course. Their tickets are separate. Choose the operator first, then use the area guide below.

Quick answer: Choose Gwanghwamun or Jongno for the simplest Tiger Bus start, Dongdaemun or DDP for the simplest Yellow Balloon start, Myeongdong or Euljiro for a flexible central compromise, and Seoul Station or Namdaemun when rail access matters and you plan to use Yellow Balloon.

First decide how you will board

An area that works for a later hop-on may not be the best area for the first departure. Tiger Bus asks online reservation holders to exchange the reservation for a physical ticket at its Gwanghwamun ticket office. Yellow Balloon also says online purchasers must exchange their ticket at the ticket booth, although its FAQ says passengers may board at any stop on the route.

This makes the first morning different from the rest of the day. If you want the earliest practical start, staying near the operator's departure and ticket office reduces uncertainty. If you are comfortable joining later, a route stop near your hotel can be more important than the official starting point.

1. Gwanghwamun and Jongno: best for Tiger Bus

Choose this area when Tiger Bus's Downtown, Palaces and Namsan Course is your main plan. The current official route starts at Gwanghwamun and returns there after a full loop. Tiger's reservation guide also places the ticket exchange at the Gwanghwamun ticket office.

Why it works

• You are close to the Tiger Bus start and physical ticket exchange.
• Starting at the route origin is easier to understand than estimating when a circulating bus will reach a later stop.
• Yellow Balloon's Traditional Culture Course also lists Gwanghwamun Square as a stop, so the area is not isolated from the second network.

Trade-off

Gwanghwamun is not Yellow Balloon's departure base. If Yellow Balloon is your priority, confirm how you will exchange the online ticket and whether you intend to go to DDP before relying on the Gwanghwamun Square stop.

2. Dongdaemun and DDP: best for Yellow Balloon

Choose Dongdaemun or the DDP area when Yellow Balloon is your planned operator. Its Traditional Culture Course begins at DDP, and the official course page identifies the DDP ticket office and boarding area near Dongdaemun History and Culture Park Station.

Why it works

• You are close to Yellow Balloon's departure base and ticket office.
• You can begin the published loop at its first stop rather than timing a mid-route arrival.
• Tiger Bus's main daytime loop also lists DDP as a stop, giving the area some access to both operators.

Trade-off

DDP is only a stop on Tiger's daytime loop, not Tiger's Gwanghwamun ticket-exchange base. An online Tiger reservation still requires the exchange described in Tiger's official guide.

3. Myeongdong and Euljiro: best central compromise

Myeongdong and Euljiro suit travellers who have not committed to one operator or who want a central base for the rest of their Seoul itinerary. Tiger's current daytime loop includes Myeongdong. Yellow Balloon lists Euljiro 3-ga, Euljiro 1-ga and Myeongdong on its Traditional Culture Course.

Why it works

• Both daytime route maps include stops in or near this area.
• It can be a practical later hop-on area after you have handled any required ticket exchange.
• You avoid choosing accommodation solely around one operator's route origin.

Trade-off

This is a compromise, not a shared starting terminal. The two operators remain separate, and traffic, demonstrations or service changes can make a mid-route arrival harder to predict. Check the selected operator's current timetable on the morning of travel.

4. Seoul Station and Namdaemun: best for rail-first itineraries using Yellow Balloon

Yellow Balloon's Traditional Culture Course currently lists both Seoul Station and Namdaemun Market. Its course page describes the Seoul Station boarding point at the bus transfer centre. This area can therefore suit travellers who value mainline rail access and plan to join Yellow Balloon's daytime loop.

Why it works

• Yellow Balloon provides an official route stop at Seoul Station and another at Namdaemun Market.
• The area can reduce hotel changes or cross-city transfers when your itinerary begins or ends by rail.
• The operator FAQ says a one-day ticket can be used to board and leave at route stops.

Trade-off

Do not treat Seoul Station as a common hub for both networks. Tiger's currently published Downtown, Palaces and Namsan stop list should be checked separately, and online ticket exchange rules still apply.

How to choose in 60 seconds

1. Choose your operator. Tiger Bus and Yellow Balloon sell separate tickets and publish separate routes.
2. Decide whether the first departure matters. If yes, favour Gwanghwamun for Tiger or DDP for Yellow Balloon.
3. Check ticket exchange. Do not assume a mobile reservation alone lets you board at any stop.
4. Open the current timetable. Traffic, demonstrations, weather and operational conditions can delay or change service.
5. Then compare hotels. Check the actual walking route from each property entrance, not only the neighbourhood name.
